An Ideal Client Scenario & My Design Process

I was writing up a scenario for an ideal client avatar really more for behind the scenes purposes for myself and my marketing, but as I was writing I thought why not share with you a little bit about an ideal client scenario and then how I would move through their project to the end result.

The client’s backstory

So, I want to introduce you to Maggie (this is based on a made-up scenario), she is a small online business that sells stickers, custom stationery, and other crafty knick knacks. Maggie is an artist and illustrator and creates all of her own products. She sells both wholesale and retail, as well as, does some art licensing with retailers. Because Maggie is an artist, she has been doing all her packaging materials and website design and maintenance herself. But she is exhausted and struggling with indecisiveness and feels like her entire brand is just a hodge podge of random designs and ideas and colors. She is starting to lose confidence with her wholesale and art licensing clients because of how inconsistent all her brand touchpoints are.

She basically wants to scrap everything and do a full rebrand the right way this time so she can feel more confident and create more leads for the wholesale and art licensing side of her business.

Let’s break this down a bit

So now that you’ve heard Maggie’s spiel, let’s dive deeper into what she’s actually asking for. Let’s read between the lines a little bit here. After listening to Maggie’s story all I can hear is she is missing out on MONEY! She says she ultimately wants to feel more confident so this means right now she is too embarrassed to send her website links out and is probably too embarrassed to pitch to potential retailers which means she is leaving money on the table! She is missing out on new retailers and more people becoming enrolled in her brand. There is so much potential there so where do we start?

The process

First things first, Maggie needs to answer a series of questions about her business, her goals, brand strategy, and share a little bit more with me about her story and ultimate why. Questions like:

  • What results does she create for her customers?

  • Why did she start her business and how long has been doing it?

  • What is her marketing strategy for driving customers and retailers to her new website?

  • Who is her ideal customer and retailer?

  • What does her pricing currently look like?

  • What are your retailer/customer red flags?

  • If she could describe her products and illustrations using 3 words, what would they be?

  • What do you want your business to look like a year from now?

  • And more!

Questions typically arise in organic conversations with clients so these are a good chunk of my base questions and then I build on that during the conversation. I want to have a clear picture so I can have a deep understanding of what the client wants and bring their visions to life.

After this strategy call, I get started on the creative direction, competitive research, and strategy research. I start building out a brand strategy presentation outlining creative strategy and my approach to the creative direction, a mood board to visually show and tell the look and feel of the brand, and more info relating to this creative direction. Before I get started on actually designing, I want to make sure we're on the right page.

I will send this presentation to Maggie as a screen recorded loom video of me walking her through this presentation. I find this is so much better than either just sending the presentation as a pdf in an email or trying to work within schedules to present live on zoom. This way I can present on my time and she can watch on her own time.

Once I get approval from her or her feedback, I start concepting and putting together her new logo, color palette, typography palette, and mockups of her packaging for her to see her new branding in use.

This is another loom video presentation. But since this is a lot more info than the creative direction presentation we will schedule a phone or zoom call to discuss feedback and any revisions, preferably within the next 2 days.

I find having time to view and then sleep on the design is best so that is why I don’t present live on a zoom call.

If Maggie has any revisions, I work through those and present them to her, and then once her branding is perfect, I move on to web design and development.

First, I start on the website strategy. I work through the client’s journey, site architecture and then a rough sketch of how everything will be laid out. Once I’m confident with that, I start working on a wireframe of her website to lay everything out and send her another loom video walking her through my design choices. Once that’s approved we move on to the development and I prepare her for the launch of her new website!

Of course stuff like contracts, invoices, and onboarding and offboarding, are sprinkled in the beginning and end of the project but that’s the boring, nitty gritty stuff.

The most important part

Now that Maggie has a new brand and website that she is obsessed with and wants to shout from the rooftops for everyone to see, her confidence restored!

She now has the necessary tools to create more revenue for herself, less stress, and more time and energy to spend connecting with her audience. She will see massive returns on her investment because of the results she can create with her new brand and website experience.
